The terminus of the Pöstlingbergbahn in Tower IV of the fortress

The Pöstlingberg Railway

In the 1830s Pöstlingberg was cleared and fortified for military reasons. This allowed great views on the Danube valley and caused a surge of hikers and pilgrims, the latter arriving in the small chapel built a century before. By 1883 it was demilitarized and in 1897 the construction and complex development of the railway and fortress area began. The line opened in 1898 together with the Pöstlingbergschlössl hotel and beer garden, followed by the Grottobahn in 1906. The line was electrified from the beginning and had a gauge of 900 mm. 2008-2009 it was regauged to 1000 mm (apart from one of the tracks of the former Urfahr terminus that was cnstructed to avoid crossing the Mühlkreisbahn) and since that the trams have been running to the Hauptplatz on the same metre gauge as the citywide tram system.
