As half of Romania was originally part of Hungary until after WW1, the rail network is not centered at Bucuresti. Instead there are concentrical main lines passing the Carpathian Mountains at different places, some taking a detour to the South to come around the Transsylvanian Basin, some descending to the Basin and then climbing out of it again, and this line is coming around it at North.
