During the autumn of 2017 we set out for some coloured tree photos to Slovakia. The first photo of the trip was this one with a Košice to Zvolen fast train on the track connecting from the mainline to the Southern end of Fi'lakovo station. The original line connected from the North, allowing trains to pass from Budapest towards Jesenské and Plešivec, with a triangle for Zvolen to Plešivec or Miskolc trains to make a shortcut without reversing at the station. This branch of the triangle is still used, but the original line had been long removed to be replaced by a loop running around the station and connecting to its South so that trains from Zvolen to Košice can directly travel on without the need of reversing.

After the photos in the morning we went on towards the mountains covered in autumn foliage, first the area of Veporských vrchov. Previously I had three trips to the Jesenské - Rimavska Sobota - Tisovec - Brezno railway but mostly took photos of the steam-powered historic rack-and-pinion trains, so this time we focused on the class 812 railcars that provide the everyday trains around here. These example are surprisingly still carrying their original, crimson and white, thin stripe livery. Our first shot here took place at the Tisovec - Rimavská Sobota section where the traffic is more intense. It is worth having a look at some other photos we took on the railway:

The class 812 is of course not a rack railcar but with cautious driving the little railcars are capable of running up and down the incline. This track though is not even nearly as steep as the Pilatusbahn or even the Budapest Rack Railway .

Podbrezová is a small settlement, the reason for the huge station building is the steel mill operating here. That's why it was the starting point of the Zolyombrézó - Tiszolc - Rimaszombat HÉV, a local railway that built the rack-and-pinion railway accross Zbojská in the Vepor Mountains. The railway to Vereskő (Červená Skala) was a branch line to that railway, which was rebuilt and extended as a main line as far as Margecany, using an existing mine railway from Margecany to Gelnica and its narrow-gauge extension as far as Mnísek nad Hnilcom. The rest of the narrow-gauge railway to Smolník was dismantled. Photos can be found on this Slovakian webpage .

It's difficult to find new photo locations on this line, especially on the Banská Bystrica to Brezno section, which has a lot more trains to photograph than the rest of the track. Some of the regionals here are locomotive-hauled so wer really wanted to take photos of them before they are converted into class 861 Húsenica or class 813.1 Mravec multiple units. We really liked this place as the beautiful mountainous background and the seldom visible Hron river gave a great company to the short class 754 Brejlovec hauled regional train.

We didn't plan taking a photo of the Manipulák (yet alone on a Saturday), but it was a pleasent surprise seeing it ready for departue at Gašparovo. e had just enough time to drive back to the nearest curve with a leve crossing and an acceptable direction of sunlight. This freight train often has duties all-year long, runs from Brezno to Telgárt, sometimes even Mlynky and often has loaded carriages on 4 or 5 stations ending up with a lot longer train. We didn't mind this short train of course. Because of cutting some trees a new angle appeared for taking photos of this classical motive in the Low Tatras. The colours in the background are breathtaking, so this is officially my new favourite photo .

On the second day of our trip we took photos in the High Tatras along the Tatra Electric Railway mostly but once on the Štrba - Štrbské Pleso Rack Railway too. I already have many photos from here but still haven't managed to have all of them uploaded.

It is worth taking photos of the Tatra Rack Railway / Štrba - Štrbské Pleso Rack Railway as well as ŽSSK has already placed an order for five new GTW trainsets that will be capable of running on both the Rack Railway and the Tatra Electric Railway. The trains themselves are going to be identical to the similarly used trainsets of the MVR and the AOMC in Switzerland and are going to be supported by a rack and adhesion capable, dual mode (catenary and diesel) locomotive which will be used for departmental duties, also supported by Stadler and identical to TPC's three such locomotives . This is the kind of photo everyone would like to take in the High Tatras! This section has been newly opened up, previously there was a line of pine trees between the track and the road obstructing this view. The mountains visible in the background are Končistá and Gerlachovsky štít, the latter is the highest mountain in Slovakia (though the main peak is not visible from here).
