The Ge 4/4III 642 RhB-Team
advertising livery locomotive on the Albula-IV viadukt between Muot and Preda
The valley is mostly covered by larches, giving a beautiful, high-contrast background. The railway doesn't just follow the Albula river, it wouldn't be possible, since between Bergün station and the entrance of the Albula-tunnel there is only 6 kilometers but an elevation of 407 meters. To keep the gradient at 35 promille they had to double the length of the railway with the tracks crossing from one side of the valley to the other four times. This is the last such crossing, the Albula-IV viadukt with the 220 meters long Maliera-gallery behind it.
