We visited the Langwies-Viaduct near Arosa on the same trip we visited the Waldenburgerbahn, featured in a previous album , and the Chur-Arosa-Bahn was the last piece of the RhB we have not set foot on before. We could not travel on it to the terminus but we did manage to take a photo of a descending train on the well-known landmark, built four years after the groundbreaking new construction of the two Újsinka viaducts on the Fogaras - Brassó mainline in Hungary by Professor Szilárd Zielinsky (now: Sinca Noua, Romania), of a very similar design. The woodworks of the construction, like always before on the RhB, were of course managed by Richard Coray.

As the material I have is far from being exhaustive I am not going to go deep into the history of the ChA, instead please follow our track on to the Albula Railway!

We climbed to this lookout point by the Albulabahn because we wanted to take a photo of a train running on the Landwasserviadukt with the locomotive ahead - as the universal control cars will gain room almost all trains here will come with a driving trailer on the front.

The main appeal of the Albula Railway is the freight traffic on many beautiful bridges. This twin-section locomotive is special in that it can only adjust vertical curves, not horizontal ones, though the middle bogie of the three can move sideways of course. Quite different from most twin-section locomotives .

The Basel to Olten Hauensteinstrecke has its most famous construction in Rümlingen. The viaduct was originally built with double track. The line, which was built between 1853 and 1858 connected Basel to the middle of Switzerland and was quite important. Between 1912 and 1916 a new base tunnel of length 8134 m was built making the old main line obsolete. Since then, it only serves the local communities (the Läuferfingli) and has been reduced to single track.

Under the bridge is the Calvinist church visible with it s typically Swiss tower.

Originally the Rhb / Chur-Arosa-Bahn ABe 4/4 railcars had this role, that arrived here after the Arosabahn was changed from the original, 2400 V DC catenary to 11 kV 16,7 Hz AC and the railcars became surplus.
