On this trip we got familiar with the steam and diesel locomotives of the forest railway.

This photo from Zakarpattia oblast is a part of a long trip we had in Ukraine and the nearby Maramures region in Romania. In this album I am only going to show photos of the Romanian side, mainly our visit to the Mocanita CFF Viseu de Sus narrow-gauge railway and I am going to publish our photos of the dramatic Ukrainian mountain railway in a separate, more detailed album. Of the trains running by the Tisza river I have many photographs from the past 
and I have quite a number of photos of the Viseu network as well .

After crossing the border from Ukraine to Romania at Solotvino/Sighetu Marmatiei we departed towards Viseu de Sus but first came accross this fast train on the main railway line. The train uses the Salva - Viseu de Jos - Valea Viseului - Sighet railway, which was created by Romania as a new connection between the former Hungarian branch line Valea Viseului - Viseu de Sus - Moisei - Borsa, forking from the Batevo - Berehove - Sighet - Rakhiv - Yasinya - Vorokhta railway in the Tisa valley. The original branch line gently followed the flow of the Viseu river while the new connection leads from the Transcarpathian region to the Transylvanian Basin with spectacular viaducts.

Or main destination was the CFF Viseu de Sus narrow-gauge forestry railway where a number of steam locomotive hauled trains travel each weekend. We have visited the railway in 2008 as well when I took a photo of the station with still rack plait, standard+narrow gauge in front of the building. One track in the depot also served the standard locomotives.

I work as a narrow-gauge track worker in my free time and I would never do anything like this.

The CFF Viseu 764 408 | |
The trains follow each other in a regular pattern as they stop after Novat for a water recharge but they are not allowed to tail each other even in that case. Cozia-1 has been at the railway since 2001 and is owned by R.G.Holz. It was built in 1986 at Reghin based on the planes of the Resita 490 class (which, in turn, is absed on the Budapest MÁVAG class 490).

Bavaria has previously been at the Internationaler Rheinregulierungsbahn, before that at CFF Tismana near Targu Jiu. It was built in 1954 at Resita.

The locomotive was built in 1955 in Reșița and has been at Viseu since 1962!
