The stored energy allows the locomotive to take up about three cars from an unelectrified siding and take them back to under the catenary. They used this feature many times, so the shunting freight train could run with an electric locomotive, even when some loading tracks weren't electrified. Nowadays these trains mostly run with diesels even though they run 90% under the wire.
