The CFR 461 002-9 seen between Rusi and Calan
After Deva we turned South to the Simeria - Petrosani - Targu Jiu - Filiasi railway which offered a lot better photo opportunities with its mountainous landscape than the main line towards Brasov. When the line from Arad to Alba Iulia was finished in 1868, the branch to Petrosani was already under construction, and its coal mines were reached by the trains a lot earlier than the Transylvanian capital Brasov, even though the terrain was a lot harder for the consturction workers this way than in the middle of the Transylvanian Basin. This was the first place where a Hungarian railway reached the original border towards Romania, but because of the gorge of the Jiu river a railway connection was not established, so the first time trains could travel to Romania was when the railway from Timisoara over Caransebes reached the Duna river at Orsova in 1878.
