The MÁV-START 418 178 seen between Kispest and Kőbánya-Kispest
Photos like this are almost too ordinary, perhaps so much so they didn't deserve to be taken. But not taking photos of the everyday life of railways can often lead to regret, when years later all that is gone. Destroyed, or just replaced by something newer and - said to be - better. How long locomotive-hauled short diesel trains will be present in Budapest's commuter service is a riddle no-one knows the answer to. They had gone for a short amount of time when enough Desiro railcars were available because of the reconstruction works on the Esztergom line, but returned later. First, because of neccessity, second because the Desiros were moved to more provincial locations (that actually better suit them). How long is this locomotive going to last? How long these cars? How long this particular railway line from Budapest to Lajosmizse? It can't be said. This photo is not of any particular merit, certainly doesn't have any kind of aesthetic appeals, it doesn't appear to be historically important, but that may change quickly. The 418 130 burned down last week, end even though it appears to be salvagable (with great investment though), it's uncertain whether they will scrap it or repair it. Therefore all photos of said locomotive are quite valuable now, and I'm glad I have a handful of them, one even depciting the locomotive outside the borders of Hungary, in service in Ukraine:
