The ÖBB 1216 231 seen between Breitenstein and Klamm-Schottwien in the Weinzettelwandtunnel
Originally the famous arcade tunnel was not planned here, instead a sunlit balcony was planned at the feet of the tall rocky wall of the Weinzettelwand. Later even an artificial waterfall would have been added. The structure of the wall could not take this engineering, and after a fatal accident Ghega took the correct measure and moved the whole track into the mountain, into a tunnel, that was a lot safer to build. Since the cholera was having a large toll on the builders they did not need any further source of problems.
